PROJECT 03 / Effects of Time
Two prints will be shown from this project
One roll of film (you will shoot multiple subjects - with your set of rules and pick the best set for the print)

Parameters
Effects of Time on a Person
Effects of Time on a Place
Effects of Time on a Object
Before and After (Person / Place / Object)

You must set rules for shooting and send them in a proposal to me by 5 pm on Friday and start shooting. Rules will include what the subject must do. Where you will shoot. What time of day aka lighting. What the timeframe is.

PROPOSAL
Type up a proposal and copy into a body of an email with your idea. Send it by 5 pm Friday. If you have more than one idea send it along. This will give you the weekend if you want to shoot.

Here's a quick Example:

Dear Ms. Posey,

I would like to shoot pictures of people before they get into the pool and out of the pool. (Before and After)

Here are my rules:
1. I will shoot on a blank background edge of the pool wall.
2. I will stand 4 feet away and get the whole body of the subject in the picture.
3. The subjects will be shot before they get in the pool.
4. The subject will be shot as soon as they leave the pool.
5. I will shoot from 3 to 5 pm or until I run out of film.
6. I will shoot anyone who gets in or out of the pool.

PHOTO DIARY ASSIGNMENT FROM THURSDAY, Oct. 17
Shoot a space that is quiet and return to that space and shoot another photo when it is crowded or noisy. Come with the two photos in B&W on Tuesday on a flash drive. We will look at in class. Remember these assignments will make up your final assignment for the class so be sure to keep up with them as you go and don't loose these images.

Tuesday, October 15

PHOTO DIARY:
Shoot three strangers in the style of Yo Imae. http://www.yoimae.com/subtle/index.html Shoot on a dark background. Center your subject in the frame. Shoot from the upper thigh up and make sure there is breathing room for the head in the frame. Make sure that your three strangers stand at the same mark and that you the photographer stand in the same place for every stranger that you shoot. Turn to B&W and bring the files to class on a hard drive.

PORTRAIT CRITIQUE
Three photos (environmental portrait / casual portrait (mid range with less background info) / close up).
Put your favorite under glass (get your frames out of hallway and off the table outside of my office in A17 in the humanities suite). The other two will go in your binder. You can keep your old project in the binder. Organize in the same order as the last set.
From the front
1. Photo Summary (tell why this person made a good subject...challenges and successes)
2. Negatives
3. Contact Sheet
4. Two Final Prints (and one under glass)

We will critique in the same manner as last time with one framed displayed the other across the set. Remember I am looking for the tone in all three photographs to be similar. Should think about getting the same value scheme to match across the prints.

The lab is open all break long if you need it. Good luck and have a safe fall break!

Tuesday, Oct. 8

MORNING CLASS -  A bunch of you all left your hard drives in the lab. You might want to come and get them sometime in the next couple of days before the next assignment.

PHOTO DIARY - Please have your Irving Penn portrait in B&W (this is a casual portrait / white or blank wall / light source from a window) Take one photo to get lighting and only one photo for the portrait. Also this weekend take a "portrait" of a time and place. Those of you going on the art retreat take 36 exposures of the art retreat...these must be in order and take over the span of the weekend. Those of you not going on the art retreat give us a "portrait" of your weekend in college life. You will look back on these portraits years later and smile:)

Bring your Penn portrait on a flash drive for class on Tuesday along with your 36 photos of Portrait of a Place / Time assignment from the weekend.

Keep shooting and come prepped to print on Tuesday to give yourself some time in the lab. Bring your digital camera to class on Tuesday along with your printing gear.

Thursday, October 3

Please bring your work photos on a flash drive to class. Please have your images converted to black and white. Bring your digital to class for Thursday. I would consider shooting your project and developing outside of class so you can use Thursday and Tuesday next week for printing. You will have lab time for the project on both these days.
